Grace Care visit - Level 3 Service

My mother had been living with us for four years, and it was getting much harder for me to manage her care needs. I found Grace Care’s website which explained their different services. I was finding it difficult to talk things over with my mother, but I also very much wanted her to be part of any decisions we made, so I arranged for a Grace Care Adviser to come and see us in our home.

It was clear that the Adviser, Claire, was very experienced and most diplomatic in understanding mother’s needs and then explaining her various options. I didn’t want my mother to feel I was pushing her into a care home, and it was interesting to see how readily she accepted the possibility from Claire.

Before Claire left we had all agreed that living with us was getting difficult for us all, and my mother realised this couldn’t continue, though she was very anxious about moving to a care home. Claire promised to send a report with suggested care homes for us to visit before any decisions were made. My mother was asked to give clear instructions about the things that would be important to her, and it seemed that the more things she asked for, the easier it was for Grace Care to identify the best answers.

My mother and I felt so much better for having the chance to talk things over with someone so experienced and understanding.

A few days later we received Claire’s report, with introductions to four Care Homes. Over the next week, we visited them all and my mother was pleasantly surprised by the places we saw. I’m sure she would have been badly put off the whole idea if she had seen somewhere unsuitable.

Claire phoned to see how we were getting on, and sent one more suggestion for us to visit, as she had just heard of a vacancy in a home just near us. From the homes we had seen, my mother felt comfortable to make her choice, especially as Claire had suggested spending a week or two there before making a final choice.

I can’t thank Grace Care enough for the trouble they took to guide us through this difficult decision. Claire was very diplomatic and most professional. I am left knowing that we have made the right choice, and it was my mother who was able to make the final decision herself.

At the time we were due to visit the care homes I had a bad back that made it difficult for me to drive. When I told Grace Care, they offered for a very reasonable fee to take us round the care homes themselves if I hadn’t recovered in time.* As it happened I was fine, but it was great to know that Grace Care was there for us if we needed extra help.
